In 1957, Japan launched a historic Antarctic expedition. The brave explorers packed everything they needed for the long, cold, lonely months ahead — scientific instruments, rations, warm clothing... and apparently, a certain unnamed companion of the inflatable variety.
The story goes that an anonymous "Unit 1" was quietly smuggled aboard — no official record, no name, no dignity. But the rumor didn't end there. When a second version appeared on the market shortly after, it was given a proper name: 「南極弐号」(Antarctica Unit 2) — as if to say, "Yes, there was a Unit 1. We don't talk about Unit 1."
Whether this tale is fact, fiction, or somewhere gloriously in between, it has quietly lived on in the memories of a certain generation of Japanese people who know exactly what that name means — and can't help but smile.
